Richard Holloway, legally blind with only 6% sight and tunnel vision, became known as the "Blind Guy Running" while completing seventeen marathons and raising over $250,000 for charities. Now retired from marathons, Richard is embarking on a new journey to raise money and awareness for charities. As "Blind Guy Biking" he will ride a tandem recumbent bicycle across Canada in 2009.

Canadian Progress Club Logo

Richard is a member of the Canadian Progress Club and president of his local chapter in Brampton. Through their Charitable Foundation they have created the Canadian Progress Club Cross Canada Ride dedicated to supporting athletes with disabilities and Special Olympics. Money will be raised through pledges made in support of the Blind Guy Biking. It is also the generous support of Progress Clubs and individual members across Canada that provided funding for equipment.

Special Olympics Canada Logo

As a volunteer Special Olympics basketball coach in Brampton, Richard understands the importance of participation in sport for athletes with an intellectual disability. "Raising money for these athletes will increase their opportunities; many are on a fixed income, and it can get expensive to take part," explains Richard. Fundraising is extremely important for ensuring that everyone who wants to can take part in Special Olympics programs. Richards' motto "Pedal for Medals" is his way of staying focused on assisting Special Olympians in going for the gold.

Residents and businesses along the route are encouraged to Pledge Richard on his ride. For more information on the ride, please contact Anna Holloway at 647-668-7554 email blindguybiking.holloway@gmail.com. For more information on submitting pledges through Candian Progress Club, please contact Janey Davies at 306-729-4885 email j.davies@sasktel.net.
